Test Old Attic Insulation for Asbestos

Here’s another test to add to the list when you’re inspecting an older home: Test for asbestos in the old insulation. Why does it matter? It can be remediated – and it may cost several thousand dollars to do so!

A Buyer of ours tested in their Congress Park bungalow. There was no asbestos detected.

Experts recommend testing (3) clumps of the old insulation. You can pay an Industrial hygienist to collect and test for you – or – simply ask your home inspector to collect in (3) NEW Ziploc bags. In the Denver area, many professionals use Reservoirs Environmental to do their testing – and they will also do the tests for homeowners: http://www.reilab.com/. The cost is $40 for the first sample – and $20 for each additional.

Important: If asbestos is found in a property, it MUST be disclosed to any Buyer considering purchasing your home. Better to test upfront and then ask the Seller to help/totally pay for remediation before you Buy!
